Creative Museum Restaurants are the Latest Exhibits

Above, the Guggenheim, New York; Below, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago
In recent years, as museums around the world receive face-lifts from such notable architects as Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, and Renzo Piano, so too has followed the museum restaurant which previously was a cafeteria after-thought where a guest might stop to pick up a bottle of water. Now, however, many museums have created their own dining masterpieces that offer just as much curated appeal in the food as in the design. Read the rest of this entry »

A quick chat with GLAMOROUS co.’s Yasumichi Morita

Yasumichi Morita (Photo by I.Susa)
Welcome to a new year and a new decade! To kick things off we wanted to share our little chat with noted Japanese designer Yasumichi Morita. Morita had his start at the age of 18 when he designed the bar Cool in Sannomiya, Kobe. He went on to become chief designer at renowned design consultancy Imagine Inc.
In 1996, Morita started his own company Morita Yasumichi Design Office which in 2000 was restructured and renamed GLAMOROUS co., ltd. He has since worked on award-winning projects of all types all over the world.
DE: Please tell us about your background. What led you to a career in design?
YM: In my school days, I had a part time job doing window displays. I was so much into fashion that I needed money to buy hip clothes and the job was good pay because it required night duty. My talent was found there and I got more and more offers. In those same days, there was not an outlet that me and my mates wanted to go to. So I thought I would design and make one if there was not any.
DE: We really admire the breadth and depth of your work! Looking back over the last 14 years, which project stands out most in your mind? Which of them best represents a key moment of growth for you?
YM: Thank you! MEGU New York was my debut project in USA and it has gotten lots of acclaim. That project led to other projects as the job offers began rolling in, including W Hotel Hong Kong, my first 5-star hotel project. W Hotel Hong Kong is also a memorable project for me, boosting my new reputation and inviting new clients from around the world.
